Casualty Assistance Programs
Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP)
The purpose of SBP is to enhance the military estate program by providing surviving dependents of military personnel a portion of your retired pay to maintain a reasonable level of income. Before retiring, you MUST make a valid SBP election, by making an appointment with an SBP counselor. If you fail to make an election before retirement, the DFAS automatically establishes maximum coverage for all eligible dependents (spouse, children, or spouse and children) and deducts the appropriate premiums from your retired pay. SBP briefings are conducted by the POC; call for an appointment 723-1444.
